Advance Dates

Confirmation Class

We will be starting a Confirmation Class in September for all youth in grades 8 and 9. Letters were sent out earlier this week explaining a bit about what the class will look like. If your child is in grade 8 or 9 and you didn’t receive a letter—or if you know someone who might be interested in joining the class—please contact Rev. Jeff!

Faith and Film Series

Back by popular demand, we will be hosting a Faith and Film series here at the church this summer. On six Thursdays throughout the summer (see schedule below) we will gather in the Parish House for a movie at 6:30 p.m. This will be followed by a time of reflection and discussion as we talk about the theological and religious themes in each film. In the past, this study series has provided a very rich ground for discussion.

Our film choices this summer are an eclectic mix of humorous and serious—all with very strong religious/moral themes running through them. All are welcome to join us, though please be advised that all the films are rated PG-13. The schedule is below:

August 28, 2008—Bruce Almighty

Evening Study Group Summer Reading

The Evening Study Group has decided to try something a little different this year by assigning some summer reading! That’s right, the plan is for the group to read Nikos Kazantzakis’ controversial novel "The Last Temptation of Christ" in preparation for conversation about it on September 9. Then, from October-December, we will be reading "The Good Heart" by the Dalai Lama. Both books should provide some good fodder for conversation. We’d love to have you join us! Contact Rev. Jeff for more information.

Kittery’s Fuel and More Program

Did you know that through the generosity of P. Gagnon and Sons oil company, Kittery’s Fuel and More program (which supplies fuel assistance to those in need in Kittery) will be able to purchase fuel at a cheaper rate than we normally get it this year? The catch is that the fuel needs to be purchased by August 31st. So, if you’re planning to make a donation this year, why not give a little early—your money will go that much further! All donations can be mailed to Kathy Pridham, General Assistance Administrator, at Town Hall. Be sure that they are clearly marked for the Fuel and More program. Thanks!

National Youth Event:

Did you know that the United Church of Christ is holding a nation-wide youth event this summer in Knoxville, Tennessee? It’s true! Youth ages 13-18 are invited to check out the following website http://www.ucc.org/calendar/national-youth-event-2008.html and sign up for a week-long event that’s bound to be life-changing. For more information, contact Rev. Jeff, and act fast—transportation from Maine is filling up fast!

Rally Sunday

It’s never too early to start thinking about Church School—especially when Labor Day comes so early! The 2008-2009 Church School year will kick off on Sunday, September 7th. The festivities start at 9 am. Families are invited to come to the Parish House to register their children, while the Religious Education Committee will have some goodies and activities for the kids. This will also be the first Sunday of Church School. And yes, we will be utilizing the same rotation model this year, along with the Power Xpress curriculum.

This means that we will are now looking for teachers to help us out with the coming Church School year. You can volunteer to teach for just one month. All it takes is preparing a lesson once and teaching it three times to different classes! It’s that easy! For more information about teaching, about Church School, or to volunteer

—please contact any member of the Religious Education Committee: Kristen Gallagher, Lisa Harris, Becky Neal, Dawn Perkins, Susan Simmons, or Rev. Jeff. Thank you, in advance, for your help—this program doesn’t run without you!

Habitat for Humanity

A date has been set - Saturday, September 20th - from 8:45 to 3:00 to help build a home in Farmington, NH. We are looking for 10 volunteers, aged 14 and up. No experience is necessary - there will be a job for everyone. Just bring a lunch and join us for this very worthwhile project. If you are interested, please contact Rev. Jeff.

Coming Attraction: A Festival of Folly and Fun

Do you Recite poetry??

Ride a unicycle?

Juggle?

Do magic tricks?

Sing? Dance?

Do a comedy routine?

Play an instrument?

Perform with puppets?

(You get the idea)

If so, dust off the old costume, get your act together and bring these (or other talents) to share with others at the Music Committee’s Talent Show on Friday, 17th October. Curtain time will be 6:30.

All will be in the spirit of fun. Light refreshments will be available.

Members and friends of the 1st Congregational Church are welcome to participate. Practice sessions will be arranged. Length of each act - five to seven minutes if possible.

This Talent Show will be a fun fund-raiser for our church so we look forward to a goodly number of performers playing to a full house.

To reserve time for your performance, call Morgan McCurdy at 207-439-1685 or Dick DeChard at 603-433-6293.
